• Be sure to turn off the lights in the bathroom, bedroom and common room when you are not using the room.
• Unplug electronics that are not being used.
• Use CF or LED lights and light bulbs.
• Do not leave your cell phone charger plugged in when you are not charging your phone.

• Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth/shaving/washing your face/etc.
• Take shorter showers.
• If there is a leak (faucet, shower, pipe) in your room, report it immediately.
• Only do laundry when you have a full load to clean.

While reducing our energy and water consumption is important, as well as recycling the materials we use, there are many other ways that we can generate less waste to go to the landfills.

• Use a reusable water bottle.
• If you don't like tap water, get a filter system.
• When possible, print notes/papers/etc on both sides of the paper.
• Bring a reusable shopping bag with you on all shopping trips.
• Walk, bike or take public transportation as much as possible.
• Sell or donate unwanted items instead of throwing them away (See "Chuck it for Charity" below).
• If you want more information on being sustainable, pull up your favorite internet browser and search ways to sustainable, there will be 100s of ideas for you to choose from.

Signature Programs

The following are recurring sustainability programs that take place on campus:

• Chuck it for Charity — Unwanted items are collected at the end of each semester. They are then sorted and donated to local charities and groups. 

• Recycle Mania — This is a way for multiple campuses to compete for being the most sustainable. During a 10-week period in spring colleges and universities across the United States and Canada weigh their trash and recycling and are ranked based on which campus recycles the highest percentage and produces the least amount of trash.
• Garnet and Gold Goes Green — The friendly face of recycling at all football games in Doak Campbell Stadium. This initiative encourages fans to recycle their beverage containers at the games.

• Phantom Slayer — This initiative seeks to raise awareness about "phantom loads", or electronics that use energy when they are plugged in or switched "off". It is a month-long competition between residence halls to reduce their energy consumption.

Become an Eco Rep!

There are many ways to get involved with promoting sustainability on campus. An excellent opportunity for promoting sustainability in the residence halls is to become an Eco Rep. Eco Reps are elected Hall Government Executives that work directly with the FSU Sustainable Campus Initiative and their residence halls to develop sustainable practices. This ranges from promoting recycling in the halls to designing and implementing hall-wide and campus-wide programs.
