Pest Control

Pest Control Technicians will treat rooms on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. All residents needing service need to log the request at the Front Desk on the sign up sheet. Your Facilities Supervisor will escort pest technicians while they are in your room."

Minimizing Pests in Your Room

  • Clean your room regularly. Piled-up, loose papers and clothes on the floor can provide a habitat for pests.
  • Keep your trash container covered.
  • Store food when not in use.
    • Sealing food in airtight containers is always a good idea.
    • Make sure food lids are closed properly.
    • Avoid leaving sweets and other sugary foods out.
  • Clean all spills promptly. Drinks can leave behind a sticky/sugary residue.
  • Prevent moist and damp areas.
    • Close your windows. Humid outside air causes condensation inside your room.
    • Unfold shower curtains for drying.
    • Keep all drains unclogged.
  • Eliminate grease build up in stoves and all appliances.

Preventing Bed Bug Infestations

Bed bugs are very successful hitchhikers, moving from an infested site to furniture, bedding, baggage, boxes, and clothing. Although they typically feed on blood every five to ten days, bed bugs can be quite resilient; depending on climate conditions, they are capable of surviving anywhere from a few months to a year without feeding.

A few simple precautions can help prevent bed bug infestation:

  • Check any secondhand furniture, clothes, etc. for any signs of bed bug infestation before you bring into your room. They will often hide in soft material like cushions, clothes and mattresses.
  • Our mattresses are already encased in plastic, but if you do choose to add a mattress cover, use one that is a light color. The light color of the encasement makes bed bugs easier to see.
  • Reduce clutter in your living area to reduce hiding places for bed bugs. They like dark, damp spaces.

When traveling out of town or back home:

  • In hotel rooms, use luggage racks to hold your luggage when packing or unpacking rather than setting your luggage on the bed or floor.
  • Check the mattress and headboard before sleeping.
  • Upon returning to your residence hall, unpack directly into a washing machine and inspect your luggage carefully.
