With
more than 6000 residents living on campus, it is imperative that
we do what we can to help sustain our natural resources and provide
education about and the opportunity to recycle whenever we can. Beyond
providing residence halls which are equipped with many sustainable
features, we all must do our individual part to contribute to conservation
efforts and reduce, reuse & recycle!
Every residence hall participates in the campus initiative to recycle
plastics, glass, aluminum and cardboard. Look for the green “Recycle
Station” signs, as well as our signage, which indicates where to
put your recyclables:

When recycling in the halls, please remember the following:
-
Aluminum, plastics and glass may be placed in the same bin, regardless
of the type.
-
Please clean out the items before placing them in the bins.
-
Do not put trash in the recycle bins. This will contaminate the
recyclables and render them useless.
-
Cardboard boxes must be taken down to the dumpsters and placed
to the side for pick-up. Do not put them in the recycle bins or
leave them in the trash rooms.
-
Cardboard that has been used for food items cannot be recycled
(such as pizza boxes).
-
Even though we don't offer
in-hall recycling for items like electronics, batteries, paper,
furniture and printer cartridges, there are many places around
campus and in the community where you can! See below for more
details…

If you would like to recycle more than glass, aluminum, plastic
and cardboard, there are many options to do so throughout campus
and in the local Tallahassee community. For more information where
you can recycle other items, please see the following links:

Other
places where you can take recyclables in the City of Tallahassee
Don't have time or the ability to get off campus to recycle other
items? Think about these ideas on ways you can help:
-
Host a swap shop on your floor where people can trade items they
no longer want with others
-
-
-
Send your printer cartridges back to the manufacturer for recycling.
Most come with a postage paid envelope so all you have to do it
put the old cartridge in it and throw it in the mail. Many office
supply stores will also take them and may even offer a discount
for recycling your old cartridges
-
Only print when you need to. Consider printing on the backside
of old papers when you're just wanting to look at a draft of something.
Use Blackboard and Email to submit papers if an instructor will
allow it.
-
Donate your old cell phones and/or
pagers to a local charity such as Refuge
House who can use them as emergency contacts for victims
of domestic abuse
For more information or ideas, please see your Residence Hall staff!
